About

As you may already know, my name is D.E. Raphaely, MD. I am a psychiatrist based in Seattle, Washington. I received my medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed my residency training in psychiatry at the University of Washington. I have been practicing psychiatry in Seattle for more than 30 years (hoping to eventually get it right).

Over the course of that practice, I made a concerted effort — largely successful — to remain unaffiliated with any academic institution or professional organization. The perspective offered in this work is my own.

What I Learned So Far I learned from four sources. The first, and by far the primary one, is my patients, for whom I cannot express enough gratitude (especially keeping in mind their co-pays!). The second is Buddhist psychology and philosophy — a tradition that has been studying the pursuit of happiness for more than 2,500 years, and one that any serious student of the subject has no business ignoring. The third is my formal teachers and mentors, particularly Dr. Johan Verhulst, Dr. Gary Tucker, and Dr. Marsha Linehan. The fourth is everybody else — you know who you are.
